Anthropic just filed to go public, and its prospectus shows a net loss of $80.7 billion
Discussion
for the first half of 2026. Its revenue in the same six months was $16.3 billion.
Both numbers are real, and they tell very different stories. Revenue jumped from $1.2 billion a year earlier. Most of that huge loss, about $72.4 billion, is a noncash accounting charge tied to convertible notes that rose in value as the company's valuation climbed. On an operating basis the loss was $693 million, down from $2.1 billion a year ago. Anthropic plans to list on the Nasdaq under the ticker "ANT," and the filing itself says it "may not achieve or sustain profitability in the future."
The market liked the news. On Monday the S&P 500 rose 0.70% to 7,676.77, the Nasdaq gained 0.83% to 26,169.38 and the Dow added 0.28% to 52,361.58, ending two straight weekly losses for the S&P and Nasdaq. Chip stocks led, with the Philadelphia chip index up 2.8% on the day, though it's still down 12.2% for the month. Nvidia rose 2.39% and Tesla 5.20%, while lower oil prices and Treasury yields helped too.
The week is far from over. The Fed announces its rate decision Wednesday, Microsoft and Alphabet report that day, Amazon reports Thursday, and September PCE inflation data lands Thursday morning.
A quick "hot IPO" checklist before you chase one:
- Read past the headline number. A giant loss or giant revenue figure means little until you know what's inside it.
- New listings often swing hard in their first days because there's little trading history. Expect wide moves both ways.
- Excitement about one company can lift a whole sector for a day. Ask whether what you own actually changed, or just the mood.
- Decide your position size and exit before the first trade, not when the price is moving fast.
That's why TradeShield puts your risk limits in front of you, so a hot headline doesn't set your position size for you.
Stay sharp out there.
