Ciena fell 10% and Lumentum fell 9.8% on the same day.

Last week Lumentum hit an all-time high after its CEO said the company was nearly sold out through 2029. Then, over the weekend, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan warned that some investors are treating AI stocks like a casino without really knowing what they own. That was enough to hit the whole AI optical and networking group: Coherent dropped 7.9%, Corning 6% and Marvell 3.4%. The index barely flinched, while the people concentrated in those names took the full hit.

Meanwhile Brent crude rose 1.8% to $106.65 a barrel, and today the big banks kick off earnings season, with JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Wells Fargo all reporting. The inflation report follows on Wednesday. Plenty of chances for one headline to move one corner of the market hard.

A quick concentration check before you trade today:

  1. Look at your account, not the index. A flat S&P means nothing if most of your money sits in one hot theme.
  2. Add up your exposure by theme. Three different AI suppliers can still be one bet when the whole group sells off together.
  3. Ask what a 10% drop in your biggest holding would cost you in dollars, and decide now whether you could live with it.

That's what TradeShield is built for: seeing your real risk before the market shows it to you.

Stay sharp out there.
