$489 million in leveraged crypto positions got wiped out in a single hour last night.
Discussion
Bitcoin slipped under $81,000, and most of what got liquidated was on the long side. Traders who borrowed to bet on a bounce didn't get to choose when they exited. The exchange chose for them.
At heart this wasn't a crypto story. Oil is back above $100, long-term Treasury yields are at their highest since 2002, and U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs just had their biggest one-day outflow since June (about $485 million). When safe assets pay 5%+, speculative money gets pickier.
Three things I'd check before you trade today:
- Do you know your liquidation price, not just your entry?
- Could your position size survive a 5% swing without you being forced out?
- Did you set your stop while you were calm, or are you planning to "decide later"?
Volatility isn't the enemy. Being forced out at the worst possible moment is. That's why TradeShield exists: guardrails you set while you're calm that still hold when the market isn't.
Stay sharp out there.
