It rose 3.04% on Wednesday to close at 53,362.57, its biggest gain of the year, after the midterm results gave Democrats control of both the House and the Senate, per Reuters and CBS News.

The rally was broad but not even. The S&P 500 gained 1.58% to 7,688.73 and the Nasdaq rose 1.44% to 25,736.51, while the VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, fell about 20% to 16.69. Apple and Microsoft hit all-time highs, but chipmakers and data center operators sold off on fears of tighter rules for new AI buildouts. The Philadelphia Semiconductor index hit a six-month low, and Nvidia slipped about 2%.

Commodities moved even harder. US crude fell 7.8% to $88.60 a barrel and Brent dropped 8.2% to $95.15 on bets the shift in Washington speeds up an end to the Iran war. Gold went the other way, settling 3.4% higher at $4,061 an ounce, its biggest one-day gain since August, as the dollar weakened.

Days like this are where accounts get hurt, even on green days. A quick checklist for event-driven moves:

  • Don't chase the gap. Let the first 30 minutes settle before you enter.
  • Size down. A 3% index day means individual names can swing 10% or more.
  • Know your exit before you enter, and set the stop when you place the trade.
  • Watch both sides of the story. The same headline sent the Dow up and chip stocks down.

That's exactly why we built TradeShield: risk checks and alerts that keep you disciplined when the headlines get loud.
