Oil just posted its biggest weekly drop since 2020.
Discussion
WTI futures fell about 13.6% on the week to near $90, and Brent slid roughly 14% to around $97, per Topstep's Nov. 8 market kickoff.
Equities didn't get a quiet week either. After Wednesday's election surge, Thursday's AI and chip wipeout left Nasdaq-100 futures down about 4.8% for the week and S&P 500 futures down about 2.4%. Friday only patched part of it: the cash S&P closed at 7,376.86, up 0.31%, while the VIX still sat near 25.6, per Yahoo Finance and weekend futures boards. Bitcoin hovered around $75,600–$75,700 into the weekend.
US stock futures reopen Sunday at 6 p.m. ET. The next big print is October CPI on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 8:30 a.m. ET from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. After a hotter-than-expected jobs report Friday, that CPI number will set the tone for how hard the market prices December Fed odds.
A quick checklist before the open:
- Don't size Monday off Friday's bounce. Measure it against Thursday's drop.
- Write your CPI plan tonight: what you do if inflation comes in hot, soft, or in line.
- If you trade energy names, separate the weekly oil collapse from a lasting ceasefire. Headlines can reverse the risk premium just as fast as they removed it.
- Cut leverage into the Sunday futures reopen. Gaps happen when books are thin.
That's why we built TradeShield: your risk rules stay locked before the week opens, not after the first gap.
